Obituary of Roger Joseph Belanger

Passed away peacefully at the Mattawa Hospital on Thursday, May 24th, 2012. Roger was the beloved husband of Evelyn Belanger (née Minor), he was 87 years old. Roger was the loving father of Préscille Champagne (husband Gaston) of Mattawa, Laura Dumas (husband Réal), René Belanger (wife Sandra Walton), Rhea Nowaczek (Allan) all of Ottawa, Marc Belanger (wife Monique) of Sudbury and Paul Belanger also of Mattawa. He was the proud grandfather of Normand & Stephan Champagne, Melanie Allen (husband Garry), Eric, Genevieve & Robyn Nowaczek, Kurtis Belanger, Josée & Martine Belanger and great grandfather to Evan Champagne and Destiny Lavoie. He is survived by his siblings Aldiana Lamothe, Richard Belanger, Gisèle Pellerin, Bernard Belanger & Paul-Emile Belanger. He was predeceased by his parents Oscar Belanger and Olivia Belanger (née Aubin), his sisters Blanche and Ethel and by his brothers George, Lucien, Maurice, André and Fernand. Roger worked at the Post Office in Mattawa for twenty-four years. He served as Mayor of Papineau – Cameron Township and was a Past District Deputy of the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Board of the North Bay and District Health Unit and was a member of the Ste Anne’s Parish Council. Roger served in the Army during the Second World War as a member of the Second Canadian Division’s, Mount Royal Fusiliers. He was a part of the Second Canadian Regiment wave to land on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 60 years. Roger’s family will receive friends in the Martyn & Sloan “Mattawa Chapel” on Monday from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Anne’s Parish (Mattawa) on Tuesday, May 29thth at 11:00 am. Interment to follow at St. Anne’s Cemetery.
