It has been said that Grandmas hold our hands for awhile, but our hearts forever.
Although I couldn't hold Grandma's hand as often as I would've liked, I will hold her in my heart forever.
Even though I could never tell you all that Grandma meant to me in a few short minutes today, I would like to share a few thoughts with you...
Grandma's home was always a special place to visit, whether in North Bay or in Florida.
She always made you feel as though she had been waiting to see just you all day and once she had her day was complete.
As the oldest grandchild and relatively close in age to my aunts, I perhaps had a few more opportunities to stay overnight at Grandma's house! For me, the highlight of staying over was being able to eat dinner on TV tables in the living room while watching television (perhaps why I still like to do so today). And just before bed, we would get to have a little snack. As I got older, the snack was often crackers, cheese and a cup of tea.
I'm sure we have all experienced Grandma's unconditional love, kindness, patience and humour.
In my eyes Grandma was all about family; just look at the wonderful sons & daughters she left us with:
• Aunt Betty, Aunt Helen, Aunt Norma;
• Uncle Bruce, my Dad;
• & Uncle Myles watching over us from heaven!
To me, Grandma & Grampa's relationship was something to behold.
How many people today will get to celebrate a 64th wedding anniversary?
My most treasured memory with them is from the year I was lucky enough to drive with them to Florida. It started one day in the early fall when they were visiting at my Dad's. Grandma took me aside and asked if I would be able to drive with them to Florida. She explained that her eyes were getting bad and she didn't feel she would be a reliable map navigator for Grampa. Although I immediately said yes, she asked me not to say anything to Grampa yet because she wasn't sure how he would feel about it. A few weeks later they were at my Dad's again and this time Grampa took me aside and asked if I would be able to drive with them to Florida because he was concerned about Grandma's eyes. I just smiled and said yes, absolutely.
When I visited Grandma after Grampa had passed away, we would often go out for lunch or supper.
We would go to Burger World or Swiss Chalet or Tim Hortons. One time we went all the way to Rutherglen to La Tea Da because Grandma was curious about what had become of Jackson's store.
Although she's gone, I believe she is with Grampa again in a better place where she has no suffering.
I will always remember the great times we spent together & the happiness she brought to our lives.
Grandma, your memory is a keepsake with which we will never part.
God may have you in his keeping but we have you in our hearts!
With love... always & forever!
