Dear MacDonald Family: Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. I first worked for Clancy in 1999 when Mix 100 FM (CHUR-FM) was bought by Telemedia and I moved to the studios on the overpass. Clancy was a kind, caring and thoughtful mentor and helped me become the successful broadcaster and broadcast journalist I am today. With warm thoughts, Bill Kingston Cornwall, Ontario

Dear MacDonald Family, During the 25 years our family lived in the North Bay Area, I had the immense pleasure of getting to know Clancy. My first impression of him never wavered. He was, and will always remain in my mind and heart, a gentleman in the truest sense of that word and a knowledgeable and kind man. My heart goes out to all of you and I will keep you in my prayers.

It is with the greatest of sadness that I learned today about the passing of Clancy. He left a mark on my life and my career that will never be diminished. Clancy gave me my first paid job in radio news, at CFCH and CKAT. To this day, Clancy was one of the most organized newsmen I have ever met. As a newscaster, he knew instinctively what the local audience needed, and he offered a bold voice combined with a soft heart. A true gentleman. I remember, years later as I returned to North Bay to cover the Queen's visit, meeting Clancy once again and reminiscing. When we were both standing waiting for the Queen to arrive, an RCMP officer approached us and told us to move. I was rather abrupt in my refusal to budge, but Clancy reminded me of the need sometimes to be a little less cynical and a little more understanding of the work of others as he quietly convinced me to take the high road. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Sandie and family....we share in your loss. As the manager of the radio stations back in the '70s, I certainly knew Clancy as an outstanding employee and news professional. Everyone knew you could count on Clancy! The Ackhursts were fortunate to know the MacDonald family intimately. We were most fortunate to share many family activities. We always remember Christmas sing songs around the MacDonald piano. We,ll never forget camping at Camp Mikisew and the important skills that Clancy taught my novice family. As I moved around in my broadcasting career, everywhere we worked and lived, everyone knew Clancy and his contribution to news broadcasting in Canada. He was agreat employee, news journalist and friend.

You've heard this before....Clancy gave me my break...as he did for so many others!
I had finished a radio & TV course, toured Europe on a motorcycle, and was back in North Bay looking for a job.
I found one at DuPont making explosives over the summer, but fall came and I was laid off.
Taking a chance, I dropped into CFCH, and for the first time met Clancy. He was hunched over a desk adding up the number of local news stories his department had done that month.
He looked up, and welcomed me warmly with a smile and a "hello".
I was nervous, but soon felt at home.
CFCH had no news openings at the time, he told me, "but I'll call if something comes open".
A week later that call came.
Clancy had managed to scrounge up some money...enough to pay me for some part-time weekend work.
He was generous with his time, and a patient teacher.
He and Garth Cooper started calling me "JET", a play on my initials that appeared in the slug of my stories.
At some point I left for a full-time job, with the same company, in Timmins. So Clancy and I were in close touch.
Three years later a job opened in North Bay and I was back in the fold working with Clancy, Garth, Pete Handley and Bob Wood. Let me tell you, there was never a dull moment.
I'll remember Clancy for the gentleman he was, the teacher, the mentor, the friend.
You'll be greatly missed, Clancy MacDonald CFCH news!

When I was just starting out in radio I sent my demo tape (yes, they were cassette tapes back then!) to every news director I could find a name and address for. Not many bothered to write back, but Clancy took the time. Not only did he offer a critique - he gave me words of encouragement and told me I had real promise. Months later he tracked me down in St. Catharines. When I told him I had to stay there and work until the woman I was replacing came back he told me he respected that and he said to call when I was finished. I did. Not long after I interviewed for the co-hosting/news job at The Fox and would spend nearly a decade in the city that would become my second home.
I spent five years working with Clancy, and learning to truly appreciate the importance of LOCAL news. He impressed upon me that in a community the size of North Bay, what happens up the road is always going to take precedence over what happens in the rest of the world. North Bay wouldn't necessarily lead the newscast, but it was always part of the newscast. He LOVED his city.
He had a rare work ethic - the likes of which I've never seen in any other newsroom. He was the first one in and often the last one to leave. He never took a sick day, ever. He was part of the old guard of newsmen, and used to share all those stories about the "old days" of radio. It's a wonder they ever got any work done with the pranks they used to pull on one another!
Clance... I'll always think of you as a great teacher. I would have loved for you to know that I'm getting to help young people starting out in broadcasting in the job I'm in now. Thank you for your patience, your honesty, and for always eating my baking. The man sure did love apple pie!
Much love to Sandie, his children and grandchildren.

Waaay back in the early '90's, I had the pleasure of working with Clancy. I was Marketing/Promotions Director for the Telemedia owned CFCH/CKAT in those days, Clancy at his post as News Director.
I recall the chats in each other's office, mostly about the frustrations & stresses of the job ... but always ending on a 'up' note accompanied by a laugh or two. The day I resigned, I was scared about my unkown future! Clancy came into my office, closed the door and said how much he envied my courage to be able to do and say the 'right' thing. His advice to me was to 'get out there and see where life takes you'!
His presence and words at the right time, encouraged me to follow my heart ... I eventually returned to school, completed a Masters Degree and was ordained into ministry with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada.
I celebrate the life of a man whose job was to report the news ... but his heart's work, always touched the lives of all who got to know him.
Well done, good and faithful servant! ~ Rev Lori Pilatzke

Clancy, you kind soul....may you foever rest in peace and may your loved ones always know how many people you touched. Back in '94 I mustered up the courage to give Clancy a call to ask him for a job at CFCH/CKAT. He told me to come in for a meeting. He listened to a recording of one of my Canadore College radio newscasts. I was no star, but he took a chance on me and hired me to read early morning weekend newscasts and to fill in during summer vacations. As a result of this experience and his glowing reference, I landed a job working as news reporter for MCTV-Timmins. The day I told him good bye and thanked him for believing in me he shed a tear which surprised me but touched me deeply. I'll never forget him and will always be grateful. ( I still work as a news reporter/anchor in Timmins for Eastlink TV. )

So sorry to hear of your loss. Working with Clancy at the radio station and with minor hockey as an official was special for me as I’m sure for many others. Clancy was like a father figure, always there to help bring situations into focus, provide guidance and assistance when needed and never afraid to critique as well as provide a pat on the back. A true professional member of the broadcasting community who has left his mark on many. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Clancy was the voice of our community for so many years, reflecting our values and hopes and promoting our progress. He was always a humble man who nonetheless was ready to stand up for what he believed in, which was us, his fellow citizens. When you think of North Bay, you think of Clancy. Thank you, our friend, for all the care and love you gave to us. Rest in peace.

Sandie and Family. North Bay has lost another great individual with the passing of Clancy. Having met Clancy as a young boy when I sang in the North Bay Boys Choir to listening to him on the radio, working with him at Canadore and helping him out when he needed me to sing at all of the Bob Wood events will all stay in my mind as nothing but positive times in my life when dealing with Clancy. Always upbeat, positive and an inspiration to so many people, he has touched the lives of a tremendous amount of people of which your family should be so proud of. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers during this trying time. God Bless!

Allow me to pass on my deepest condolences. Clancy was one of those people I remember with great fondness from my J-school days because he truly cared. I remember how he sat down across from me teaching me how to read a news story properly. I kept flubbing it. It took days, but Clancy was so patient and caring. In later years, we would run into each other every now and then at RTNDA or a news event, and it was fun to share good times. Despite the sadness I feel at this moment, my life is better for having known him.

Dear Sandie and Family, Please accept by sincerest condolences on the loss of a wonderful man. I am many who were truly blessed to call him a friend. Clancy was an excellent journalist/broadcaster and an even more wonderful husband and father. I saw that first hand when RTDNA presented him with one of its first Lifetime Achievement Awards in 2003. His acceptance speech and the remarks by Andrea had us all in tears! Rest in Peace my friend. Sincerely, Terry Scott Burlington

Clancy and I played in the high school orchestra together, and were in the same class all through high school. Our music classes were quite small at that time and Clancy and I became the best of friends. Every week the orchestra played the school song at the beginning of the school assembly. The introduction to the school song was a trumpet flurry which you could always count on Clancy playing... but never exactly the same way. He improvised, he played it by ear, he did it all to that intro. It was always interesting to see how Clancy was going to play the intro to the school song. We always just laughed ourselves silly after the school song was over- because you knew Clancy was going to flash that impish smile as if to say- I DID IT AGAIN! HOW WAS IT?
