Doug and I grew up living beside each other at Base Borden. I was saddened to hear of Doug's passing. His father Dave and my father Duncan remained friends throughout the years until Dave's passing. I have posted a picture of me tied to the front railing of our steps (which was something parents back then would do to keep their rambunctious toddlers from escaping to the streets) but Doug came to sit with me.

I was very saddened to hear that Doug had been taken away from all of us. I first met Doug when he was on the Twin Otter and we took a trip up to Whitehorse. Not long after that he joined us at 412 on the Cosmo. After his Aurora time, I had the pleasure of crossing paths with him many times in all kinds of places including Mirage and KAF on the Herc. He will be missed by all who had the privilege and pleasure of knowing him

Oh Moey, Doug may be gone but he’s sure left us with some hilarious memories. Like when he made you the wooden birthday cake all beautifully iced & you were trying to cut a piece for everyone. We were all in stitches as Doug innocently stood there grinning, pretending to know nothing. And then for John’s 40th birthday party we didn’t expect Doug because he wasn’t going to be in tow. All of a sudden this dude shows up at our door all dressed as the grim reaper in a black gown, hood pulled low over his blackened face & holding a staff. He wouldn’t say a word, just kept staring at us & wandered into the house. He was a grumpy bear on the outside but inside was that wacky sense of humor & he certainly put a lot of thought into whatever he did. We’re thinking of you & Doug’s family & are really lucky that he was in our lives. I think I’ll eat a pan of pineapple squares in his honor!!! Bev & John Podlesny

I didn't know Doug well outside of work, but I do have fond memories of him as a CC130 Hercules Flight Instructor as I first started flying on the aircraft. He took a young impressionable Helicopter FE under his guidance and showed me how a multi-engine FE needed to be. He was a professional, he knew his trade well, he kept me challenged and help me learn the skills that I needed to have to be successful.
I also worked with Doug at 436 (T) Sqn. He was the go to guy, and always a professional. The Sqn and his coworkers could always count on him to go that extra distance. The RCAF lost a great FE when he retired.
Rest in Peace Brother!

I'd like to take this opportunity to offer my most sincere condolences to the friends and family of Doug. He will be missed. Doug and my father, Tim Blakesley, were good friends since before i was born, both having served in the airforce. I have many fond memories of both Doug and Maureen, as they were fairly close to my family. One memory of Doug that will always stand out to me dates back to when i was quite young, in elementary school. My class was going on a field trip to the skating rink, and I had forgotten my skates. I was pretty upset and I called my mother, and Dad was at work and unable to bring them in. So in his place, Doug was good enough to swing over to my parents house and grab my skates, in time to bring them by the school so i wouldn't miss the trip. I was ecstatic. I'll never forget that, Doug, thank you. rest in peace. I always respected you and thought you were an awesome guy.

Maureen I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Doug was a great friend of over 30 years. From our first time working together and playing hockey in Trenton as privates to his final retirement from the military, he was a respected Professional. I worked, played sports and partied with Doug in Trenton, Greenwood and Edmonton in the 80’s and Trenton in the 90’s and on. He had a unique sense of humor which made him pleasure to work with. He was a stickler for details which made him a valued member of any crew, from the CC138 Twin Otter to the CC 130 Hercules and CP 140 Aurora and a Leader as a Flight Engineer. He was a person who enjoyed live, he will be missed.

I am truly saddened at the loss of Doug. He was one of the very few that had a great impact on me as a new Flight Engineer starting out. I met Doug when I was on my Baby Flt Engr course when he was on the Hercules course. As new guys just starting, Doug was always there to help us out as we learned what it was to become an Engineer even though he was busy on his own course. On our grad day, Doug was there at the celebrations, congratulating everyone of us. When we finished, we had a bit of trouble leaving Carney's. It just happened that the Base Commander was running by and decided to get involved. When he asked "Who's the senior person here", and even though Doug wasn't involved, he stepped in between us and took responsibility like a parent protecting their young :) He took the brunt of the lashing and made sure the base commander knew he had it under control. Whether he knew it or not, that one example he set right then and there is one I try to live up to everyday now that I am in that same position. He was a mentor before it became a catch phrase :) RIP Doug, you were taken too early but rest assured, your example will live on with at least one Baby Engineer :)
