The first memories that I have of Garry is in my Aunt Carmen's kitchen, Garry is perched on the stairs going up to the bedroom. He was keeping an eye on things and in later years my brother would join him like two soldiers whose job it was to guard the fort. The fort was matante's kitchen and Garry would sit there in his quite way and not say much unless someone asked or unless he thought of someway to join in or start the "teasing" that was always a risk when Garry's dad , my Uncle Harold was around. Garry was his silent partner in those days. As a young guy, I would turn to Garry for reassurance when Uncle Harold came up with a story or a joke and like a dutiful son, Garry would always back his father.
He was as solid a man as you will ever meet and when he said he would do something it was simply done! As I grew up in our small town Garry and Claire's became a regular stop and it would be through those visits that I would get to know him, and get to watch him. When I needed advice, and yes some would say that would be often, he would always give me his opinion but only if asked. He was clear and concise and generally right.
Garry and my brother Vincent spent a lot of time fishing together, and they finally let me come with them one time. They told me I was lucky because they were taking me to one of there guaranteed spots! And in truth I believed them because they rarely came back without fish. We spent the entire day and aught nothing, not one bite. I was not a happy fisherman but Garry tried to tell me it could have been the day, the weather any number of things. He was so convinced that he said they would take me somewhere different next weekend and so they did. He was so positive that day! But we caught nothing!! He again tried to cheer me up but strangely I decided that sitting in a canoe that you carried into a lake so you could sit quietly and not talk for hours was not my thing so I gave up fishing but I'll always remember how hard he tried!!
I don't think you could be around Garry for long without seeing how much he loved our dear cousin Claire. While she was not immune from his teasing, it was of a different nature and his eyes revealed with their shine and glimmer his deep and unabiding love for her. I didn't realize at the time how much I was leaning and that was Garry's way. He could and would teach without talking, he would show you by simply doing and he wouldn't ask you to do anything that he wouldn't do himself. And so I know that Cory and Craig had a great teacher because again, if you took the time to watch you would see how much he loved his boys. He would hold them and teach them and laugh with them and it was infectious. When we all got to laughing, we should have been recording it because it was truly a beautiful thing.
I would be remiss if I didn't talk about how much Garry loved his mother and Diane, Judy, Len Dale and Bob. I remember him with them, laughing loving holding and hugging. He was a son and their big brother and he knew his job and by anyone's measure he did it well!
And so tomorrow as his life is celebrated I will remember the man, the son, the brother, the husband, the father, the cousin and my friend.
I know that God has made a place for Garry in his house and he now will be at peace with those of ours who were waiting for him.
I will miss my cousin Garry Backer!
