To our Cousins Rick, Sandi, Ginny, Jon and Families. Your mom was a wonderful caring individual. Her positive influences on each one of us as an aunt and godmother will be sadly missed. Also - on any visit we made to her she was always interested in each of our lives. Aunt Helen always found the humor in all situations. We will always remember her kindness to her sister Jessie. Our deepest Sympathies. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Much Love Carol-Anne, Jim, Nancy, Bill and families

one of my favourites!! apropos I would think."The clock of life is wound but once, and no man has the power to tell just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour. Now is the only time you own. Live, love, toil with a will. Place no faith in time. For the clock may soon be still."

My sympathies to Helen's family. I have great memories of Helen when we met at Marina Point. Helen was full of life, with a ready smile and concern for those around her. She was always very nattily and impeccably dressed - such style flair! I was delighted to get to know Helen as our families crossed paths with Lindsay in elementary school, subsequently getting to know Sandi and Wayne children and then working at the hospital with Ginny. What pleasure to meet and get to know the matriarch of this wonderful family. My thoughts are prayers are with you all.

My brother, my two sisters and I, we spent our entire childhood living next door to the Stantons. As I am sure you can image, a fascinating experience. Nowadays, they would probably make it into a reality television show.
You've heard the phrase "it takes a village". Well, in many respects, that half a block on Franklin St. was our village: the Taylers, Stantons, Haddows, MacSweens, Holmes, Campbells, Lahdes...that was our community. It was a great place to be a kid.
But the Stantons...Hank and Helen...they were special to us. The sort of neighbours where....if our parents were away, but Hank or Helen were home, and you did something you weren't supposed to...you were going to hear about it. Our parents might not find out...but we would be held accountable for our actions.
One example: I'm 15, too young to drive. Mom and Dad are out, so I figure I'd take Mom's new car out for a quick spin around the block. Who would know? Well, as I turn the corner from Ellis St. onto Franklin, who do I see standing at the end our our driveway; her arms crossed....waiting.
Our families were very close, and even though I was one of the younger members of the village, I sometimes felt like one of 8 kids....not just one of four.
There is one memory of those days on Franklin St. that will surely stay with me forever....it really speaks to the special relationship our families had.
in the early 70's, my father decided to build a swimming pool in the backyard....and he was determined to do it himself. Hank and Helen were the first to lend a hand. Dad, Hank and the rest of us...we were Labour...so you know who Management was.....Mrs. Stanton.
As you may know, when you have a pool you must have a fence around the entire yard, for safety. So, when fence construction started, my father included a special access gate to the yard...just for the Stantons. It made perfect sense...they were, well, our neighbours.
But once the pool was finished (finally)....we were introduced to the one and only "Pool Rule". You could invite whomever you wanted...so many came. You were allowed to jump off the back deck into the pool(foolish move)...so many did. You were certainly allowed to throw me in the pool for no particular reason....so many did.
However, it was made clear to us from Day 1...if Helen was in the pool, you were not. No exceptions. There might be 46 people in the pool at one time on a Saturday afternoon, but if that gate opened and Helen entered the yard, and she had her bathing suit on....then we all knew what was next. That familiar holler from my mother..."everybody, out of the pool!"
Why such special treatment afforded a neighbour? Real Simple: God help you should you get Helen's hair wet.
So...despite the hours lost when we couldn't swim; the fact that she NEVER let me get away with anything; the pleasure she had in sharing with everyone the ridiculous nickname that she and her kids saddled me with...for years. Despite it all, my memories our "our" half a block on Franklin St., and sharing that with such an extraordinary neighbour ...like Helen Stanton....those memories will be with me always.
Sandy, Ginny, Rick, Jon and family...the "neighbours" are very sorry for your loss.
