When we moved into Bircchaven in 2012 the first two neighbours we met were Katy Larouche and Helen Tripp - two of the nicest neighbours anyone might wish for. Both moved and are and were truly missed. Reading of Helen's passing is sad but brings back many happy memories of the friendship we shared. May I say Betty how lovely your posts are - she would be happy knowing this - and it's as if she is speaking ... what a dedicated gardener who not only had one of the most beautiful and interesting gardens, she was very generous in sharing cuttings and such with friends and neighbours. Even our dog who has since passed, lying on ottoman in front window watching people go by, when she saw Helen come out of her house up she got and wagged her tail hoping Helen would be coming by!!! To her family, our sincere condolences and how lucky she was to have you all in her life as she very often spoke of you all.
RIP Helen Brian, June, Debbie and Tonya

Helen was my mentor, a true friend to me. She guided me in horticulture but more than that, I admired everything about her. Helen was truly a Class Act. Rest in Peace my friend and my sincere condolences to all your family. xoxo

Helen Tripp – (Taken from an interview by Betty Foy for the September 2013 Newsletter)
“My Horticultural Bio – Purchasing a can of paint from Allan Price, an avid gardener, of People’s Paint (long gone) and receiving a complimentary Horticultural Society membership, $2.00 at the time, was my introduction to gardening in 1987, (I think). Since I was working full time with family commitments, my initial involvement was minimal. Then one day I received a phone call asking if I would be a Board member. Thinking that was quite an honor, I quickly said “Yes”. I chaired a few events and then became President in 1998 when Yvonne Cocozza, then President, was transferred out of town. My major contribution to the Society was chairing the very capable committee which produced our History Booklet ‘Still Growing’ to commemorate our 35th Anniversary in 1997. In the meantime I joined the Callander Society, completed the Master Gardener Course from the University of Guelph and successfully completed the School of Judging and Exhibiting in Horticultural and Floral Design. My husband, John and I used our judging skills to take charge of the annual ‘Front Yard Garden Contest’, a part of ‘Communities in Bloom’. This has now become the ‘North Bay Blooms’ event with involvement from the City, the mail carriers, the Horticultural Society and the Master Gardeners. Loved being a part of this! Last year I became a ‘Heritage Gardener’, a wonderful and knowledgeable group of volunteers who honored my late husband and I with a certificate as the ‘2011 Honorary Heritage Gardeners of the Year’. John was the local Master Gardener Coordinator and on the Board of the Provincial group. I was a late bloomer in my garden and have my father to thank for my green thumb. I’m convinced that my parent’s longevity is due to eating organic homegrown food. Still have my mother at age 93 who lived alone in a 5 level split home until April this year!"

THE LILAC BED (Taken from the July 2010 Green Thumb Newsletter)
A little history on the North Bay Horticultural Society Waterfront Lilac Bed. In 1995, the Society took on as its major project for that year the replacement of shrubs at the waterfront as part of the Civic Beautification Program headed by Ruby MacLeod who received professional information from the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton as to which kinds of Lilacs to buy and plant. Fifteen Prestonian and French hybrid Lilacs were purchased and planted by Ruby McLeod, Helen Tripp, Audrey Morton, Ella Fudge, Vickie Wiemer and Orida Cuksts (please forgive me if I have forgotten anyone).
The Lilac bed was one of the first beds started at the waterfront before the Heritage Gardeners were formed in 1996, according to our history book. In 1999, when I became team leader, I was very green indeed, but Helen Tripp showed me how to care for the lilacs and with her help over the years the lilacs are still alive and doing well. Our bed is called “The North Bay Horticultural Society Green Thumbs” to match our newsletter. Many hands have helped out at the bed over the years including: Peggy Dillon, Audrey Morton, Eleanor Giddens, Myrna Madigan, Sue Wood, Sue Fletcher, Marie Luise Frankel, John & Betty Cochran, Adelaide Saeger, Rosalyn Charland, Donna Williams, Debbie Caldwell, Rob & Fay Wood, Geri Openshaw and Donna Fraboni. The last Lilac bush was chosen and planted by Helen. It is the light pink lilac closet to the lake and it is called “Miss Canada”. Thank you Helen for all your hard work, dedication and love of gardening.

What I remember about Helen the most was her soft heartedness. She was always thinking about other people. She was very close to her family and we will all miss her.
