Obituary of Robert N. Ernest Harkness

The Harkness family sadly announces Bob's death at Nipissing Manor Care Centre on Thursday May 9th, 2012. Bob died peacefully at the age of 82 after several months of declining health. He was predeceased in 2009 by Beatrice May "Bea" (Pennock), his beloved and devoted wife of 51 years. The proud and loving father of Edward "Ted" and his wife Lynn of Guelph and Kathleen Maass and her husband Randy of Timmins, Bob will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Holly Maass and Simon and Renee Harkness. He will be fondly remembered by his sister Dorothy Lightcap of Burks Falls. Bob worked in the accounting department at the North Bay Regional office of Ontario Hydro, retiring after 41 years of service. He served as the treasurer for the Northeastern Region's Hydro winter carnival for over 20 years. A dedicated husband and father he cherished his grandchildren, enjoying every moment spent with them. A man of many interests and talents, he enjoyed time spent at his Lake Cecebe cottage, made maple syrup for many years, built his very own sailboat beginning in 1958 and completing it in 1963 and was a model railroad enthusiast. An avid reader, Bob was a keen history buff who was gifted with a wonderful memory for dates and events and enjoyed sharing his knowledge. The Toronto Blues Jays will miss his support. Bob's sharp wit was wonderfully keen and he loved to show his and mom's family albums to anyone who came to visit! In later years, Bob loved to frequent the Pinehill Coffee Shop where he enjoyed many a cup of coffee and conversation. Friends may call at the Martyn Funeral Home on Friday from 2- 4 & 7 - 9 pm. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held in the funeral home chapel on Saturday May 12th at 11:00 am. Interment will be in Terrace Lawn Cemetery. If desired, donations to Trinity United Church or the charity of your choice will be gratefully acknowledged as expressions of sympathy.
