We had picked baskets full of raspberries and decided to make raspberry jelly. Hours and many filled jars later we threw the remaining seeds into the garbage. The garbage cans were right outside the cottage door. During the night we heard a loud banging and crashing. We gathered in the main room to discover what was happening and realized there were three bears out the back door, laying on their backs, dipping their paws into the jelly remains and licking them. Lillian watched, delighted, until they had had their fill.

Once at the cottage we had picked berries and wanted to make a pie. This was before the cottage was equiped, in fact it was really bare bones. We needed a rolling pin. Lillian finally used a liquor bottle to roll out the dough and made a perfect pie. She was always inovatinve and never stuck for a solution.

Lillian was a great berry picker. When Dennis was young they would go out berry picking with a bushel basket and not come home until it was filled. Then Lillian had to can them, this was before freezers. Once when she was out at the cottage she wanted to pick some berries and her son who is also an avid picker took her to one of his secret picking places. She picked her containers full but when she got back to the cottage she said, "Dennis must think I'm a goat". She picked them all up a steep hill.

Lillian, despite her small stature, was always a tower of strength to all she knew & loved. Such a devoted wife and mother. She was one of the last of my parents' circle of friends (Gerry & Nate Hayes), but I am certain they were standing at those Golden Gates to greet her with God & Fred. A truly dear soul who shall be missed! With deepest sympathy -- Marla Hayes

When Lillian was a young teenager in Matheson her talent for sewing was accessed by the brides in Matheson. They would describe what they wanted and Lillian would make it for them. My best friend's mother often talked about her dress, made by Lillian. Lillian also made her own wedding dress. I don't think there was anything she could not do if she wanted to. She did carpentry, electricity, plumbing, and paiinting. She was an avid berry picker and never wasted anything in the way of food. I remember her rolling pastry with a liquor bottle at the cottage, she was very inventive and I don't think can't was in her vocabulary.

So fortunate to have had you share yourself with me, and my family - thank you for teaching me about the joy of gardening. You showed me how important worms are! Gros, slimy, helpful worms...in. my. hands! Thank you for encouraging a love of reading- I wonder how many times we read "The Wooly Dog" together? Thank you for ginger snaps and root beer floats. Thank you for euchre, and your fiercely competitive nature. Mostly, thank you for being such a role model - there are many strong, determined, feisty women in our family, and I feel very grateful to have received your love and your time.

Nana, Thanks for the never ending batches of ginger molasses cookies, homemade Christmas gifts like the year you gave all of us bathrobes. Thanks for making onions taste so good, well good enough to eat for a dollar. Sipping tea and snacking on cheese and liverwurst Sundays after church as well as nature walks along the Chippewa river. You were the first person to put into perspective that "age is just a number and you are only as old as you feel". I don't recall any projects happening at O'Brien St. that you and Grandpa did not do yourselves. You could do it all, like a Domestic Marine (General of course). Rest In Peace Nana Jeff
