The Campbell family sadly announces Charles death at the North Bay Regional Health Centre. He died peacefully on Friday March 28, 2014 following a lengthy illness, at the age of 87. For the past 59 years he has been the beloved and devoted husband and partner of June Martha Steiner. The proud and loving father of Susan Van Mierlo and her husband Robert, and Joanne Boissonneault and her husband Vincent, all of North Bay and Barbara Barone and her husband Gary of Burlington. The loving grandpa of Tina Stickland and Amy Van Mierlo Buchwald, and Stephanie and Justin Barone he will also be sadly missed by his six great grandchildren. The dear brother of Mary McGovern of St. Lambert, Que., he was predeceased by his sisters Barbara Barrington and Margaret Dunphy. Charles was a long time employee of the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), starting with the survey department in 1946. In 1964 he moved to North Bay and held various managerial positions with the ministry in the Northeastern Region until his retirement in 1981. A dedicated husband, father and grandfather Charlie had a strong sense of community. He was an active member and volunteer at the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. #23 and the Redemer Lutheran Church. He also volunteered at Tweedsmuir Public School, where he was affectionately called “Grandpa Charlie” and spent many years giving his time freely to the Roads Board in Field Township, as well as helping as a volunteer fireman. A talented and gifted woodworker he has left many works for his family to cherish. His family are especially grateful for the care and compassion given over the past few months from the nursing, cleaning and kitchen staff of A1, Palliative Care, at the NBRHC. Friends may call at the Martyn Funeral Home on Monday from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 pm. Funeral services will be held in Redeemer Lutheran Church at 11:00 am on Tuesday April 1st, 2014. Cremation will follow.
