I was sad to learn that Don has died. My parents met Dr. Earl and Hilda Somerville in 1947 at a Kiwanis convention in Chicago, and a few years later they visited us in South Carolina. Our parents kept in communication, and in ~1972 when my husband and I decided to paddle to Moosonee with our toddler, Don told us novices how to go about it. We have happy memories of that trip. Our daughter now canoes and camps out with her husband and children.

We will remember Don in our hearts and extend our sympathy to family and friends. Don was the essence of what it means to be ,as my Grandfather said, a" Northern Boy". He loved family, the North and lived life to the fullest. He will be deeply missed but we know that the many warm and colourful stories and memories will give comfort to all who knew him.

A kinder heart or more generous nature than Don's could never be found, nor a greater interest in the ideas and thoughts of others. We are poorer today for his loss and Peter and I will miss our occasional visits with him very much.
