ROBERTO ALVAREZ lit a candle

I met Dwayne in Chile in 2009. I was a young kid looking what to do with my life when I met him in a mine conference. He IS the reason why I got in love of mine ventilation and the reason why I was able to move to Sudbury after 10 years. He was always available to answer any questions from this now father of 2.
I would like to express to the family what an amazing human being he was. I would have never be where I am without him.
I tried to send a greetings letter to Susan introducing myself but I couldn't match the address.
Here is my contact information in case somebody from the family would like to know more about the story of how we met and how it turned out to be.
Rest in peace my friend, thanks for everything :)

Please accept my deepest sympathy for the passing of your husband and father. May you feel the comfort of the Holy Spirit wrap his arms gently around you. May you hold the many cherished memories in your heart forever. Dwayne was a true gentleman, well respected in the industry. He loved his family and was a proud grandfather. No conversion ever ended without Dwayne talking about his family and he was always concerned about you and your family. He was respectful of others. He was passionate about mining; always looking for a safer, more efficient way to mine. Dwayne believed safety was a 24/7 job. I am sure as he went through heaven’s gates he applied the Five Point Safety System. Many a miner is alive today because of Dwayne’s concern for safety and health. I celebrate Dwayne’s life and I celebrate Dwayne’s accomplishments. I am glad I knew him and I am glad I was able to call him my friend. Many have said they are a better, more safety conscious person for knowing Dwayne and in Dwayne’s words “I concur”.

To Susan, Sarah, Jason, Eric and family: Anyone who met Dwayne came away feeling better for it. He was a wonderful man who I was honored to have worked with for 15 years. I will miss his humour, his patience, his respect for others, and his knowledge. He truly set an example for us all in his work with people, his passion for the industry and what we were working towards, and his pride and love for his family. Take care of yourselves. He is missed!

Although we were not close to Dwayne, we did experience his warmth and compassion through his efforts for your dad. May the Lord give you peace at this time and the memories linger always.

Susan, Sarah, Jason, and Eric: I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Dwayne's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time. For the five years that I worked with Dwayne at MASHA (2000-2005), it was clear that he cared about the welfare of his colleagues, a quality that made him a strong advocate for mining safety. In the office, Dwayne was easy to talk to, had a great sense of humour, and could be a bit of a prankster. He also frequently reminded me to buy gold (maybe I should have listened). The most important thing I learned about Dwayne was that his family came first. He regularly spoke fondly about his children and Susan, the love of his life. Though I haven't lived in North Bay for several years, I would just like to take the opportunity to say that Dwayne was a great mentor and colleague. He truly made a positive impact on those of us who had the privilege of knowing him. Please accept my most heartfelt sympathies for your loss. Stephanie Bortolot

To Susan and Family: Please accept my condolences. I met Dwayne a number of years ago in his role at MASHA. We enjoyed a number of lunches together where we shared our health and safety stories and experiences. I came to respect Dwayne's visionary perspectives about safety and his dedication to the mining industry. He will be missed.

My sincerest of condolences Susan and family, I recently lost my father the same way and I know your heart-ache too well. I worked with Dwayne for five years from 2000-2005 when I worked at OFSWA and I can say with the utmost certainty that there was not a day that would go by that Dwayne wouldn't be talking about his family about one thing or another! His love for you all was clear and I never heard him say a negative thing about another person. I always knew he was about to share a great story when I'd be sitting in the lunchroom on our break, he'd walk in with a coffee, saunter over to the window, look out and pause for a moment and begin with, "You know..." Or, "Have you ever wondered..." or something along those lines! And he genuinely WAS interested in the other person, their thoughts or feelings or impressions about something. And he loved to share his "gold news" when looking at the paper! Dwayne and his pot of gold... Please take care and I will keep you all in my thoughts at this time, Angela

Dear Susan and Family, My deepest sympathies for your loss. I first met Dwayne when he worked for me as a shiftboss at Placer Dome's - Campbell Mine in Red Lake Ontario. I considered Dwayne to be one of the most progressive thinkers in the area of Health & Safety and he will truly be missed in our industry. Dwayne was always willing to help and only a phone call away. I will always remember Dwayne as being friendly, outgoing, and always had a smile on his face. Brian Hagan
