Obituary of Laura Graham Lachapelle

Lachapelle, Laura 1920-2014 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Laura, on Dec. 2, 2014. Laura died peacefully at the Brant Centre Long Term Care Residence in Burlington just 10 days before her 94th birthday. She was surrounded by her family and the caring staff of the Brant Centre. Laura was born on Dec.12, 1920 in Essex England, to Benjamin and Maude Hone. She was a Corporal in the British Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War. Laura arrived in Canada in 1946 in a converted Lancaster bomber. She was pregnant for her first child, Carol. Here she joined her husband Earl whom she met and married in England where he served with the Canadian Armored Services. Laura quickly adjusted from the moderate climate of London to the harsh winters of northern Ontario. Although she left behind the fast pace of the big city, she continued to live a busy life raising her 8 children in Kirkland Lake. In her later years, Laura lived in Hanmer, Ont. close to her son Ken and his family. Later she moved to the Walford Retirement Home in Sudbury where she spent much time with her devoted daughter-in law, Gail. In the last two years of her life, Laura was cared for by her daughter Tammy & Rod, and by her son Terry & his loving wife Janie. Laura is predeceased by her husband Earl, her son Gary, and her brother Arnold. She will forever be in the hearts of her children Carol, Terry (Janie), Ken, Tony, Pat, Rick (Louanne) and Tammy (Rod); her many grandchildren; Laurie, Tracey, Regan, Sherry, Kimberly, Carrie, Chris, Sarah, Melissa, Jessica, Darcy, Devon, Jenna and Chloe; her great-grandchildren; her great-great grandchildren; and her great-great-great grandchildren. She is remembered fondly, by her only living sister-in-law, Ethel Lachapelle of North Bay, Ont. Those who knew her will remember her beautiful smile, her wonderful sense of humour, her infectious laugh, her kind and loving nature and above all, her devotion to her family. It was Laura’s wish to be cremated. Friends may call at Martyn’s Funeral Home in North Bay, on Saturday December 6th from 12-2 p.m. followed by a Memorial Service in the Chapel. Donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Online condolences may be left at www.martynfh.com
