I was one on many young people that John hired to work in the family hardware business in the late 70's. JR was a great boss and working at Richardson's was a fun and memorable experience. I fondly remember his broad smiles, frequent laughter and selfless generosity. I also recall John's support of the Nancy Greene racing team at the Laurentian Ski Hill. If I close my eyes I can see him standing by the starting gate encouraging the racers with stop watch in hand shuffling in his ski boots to keep warm. Later on in my early twenties I enjoyed a number of summer social events at their Trout Lake summer cottage. John was a wonderful host and he shared many great stories and jokes. I wish to pass my heartfelt condolences to the Richardson clan and to David, Judi, Cathie as a friend. John Richardson was a great man who contributed much to the community and will be missed and remembered by many.

I was deeply saddened to hear of John’s passing. I remember well and with fondness my days at Richardson’s. Having been in the workforce a long time since those days, I have come to appreciate even more the good thing I had in working for a great boss like John. When I left North Bay to return to school and later when I moved to Ottawa, I often found my way back to the store to say hello and catch up. He was great company. Sincerest sympathies to John’s loved ones.

Aunt Sheila, David, Judi & Cathy. It was a sad moment when I heard the news that Uncle John had passed while we were away. I knew he was not well in recent times, and that it is "supposed" to make it easier to say goodbye. But Uncle John was a "Larger than Life" character for me growing up, who's appearance meant now things could get going. Memories of deck parties out at the cabin, with lots of laughter, stories and good family gatherings will always be cherished. His part in the growth of the North Bay community will always be remembered. Brian & Shirley Godfrey

My mom emailed me last evening to tell me of John's passing. I immediately recalled skiing with him, his robust laugh, considered opinions on many matters and his kind manner. I spent many hours at the sports shop, my favourite place in the city to spend time. It was a place that my 10-speed knew the directions to and I always felt at home there. He always carried fantastic products and selection, and after I broke the alphabetical pricing code, I knew that the deal I was getting was really a generous discount. You know, there are only a handful of people that I can think of, that their name conjures up such vivid memories. I especially appreciated a trip to Mt. Tremblant when both our families were there together. I recall his shepherding of Paul, my mom and I over to, and then down the Kandahar for our first run, so that we wouldn't fear any run on that mountain. He was a big part my skiing memories after my dad died. John's FM radio-quality voice is forever burned into my cortex along with memories of a wonderful man. Dave, Judi and Cathie, you can be proud of your dad, he was a great guy.

I had my first 'real' job working summers and part-time as a student for John in the Sports Shop. I was pretty green and made my share of mistakes but John made sure I knew that he recognized that I could do the work. I developed greatly as a person in this job and have always respected John for the way he treated me, both on and off the job. He valued us all and did many little things to make sure Richardson's was a fun place to work. His employees were also his friends. Years after I left Richardson's, John would meet me on the street and still recognize me and we would talk as though no time had passed, even though 30 years had gone by since I last worked for him. A good man who will be missed by all who knew him.

Peggy, David, Kim, Judi, Jim, Cathie and Tony. I was deeply saddened to hear of JR's passing. I bought my first pair of skates from John when I started refereeing hockey and from there, our friendship never stopped. North Bay has lost one of its most inspirational leaders with JR giving so much of himself to the community and to so many agencies. My time with JR as fellow Kiwanians and friends will never be forgotten and the lessons learned from him while working together on so many projects to make North Bay a better place to live. His memory will live on with the many programs he was involved with. Please know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers during this special time and that I hope that the fantastic memories of him will bring a smile on your faces knowing he was a fantastic human being loved and admired by many. RIP my friend and God Bless!!
