Obituary of Thomas Alvin Mitchell

Mitchell, Thomas “Tom” It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Tom on May 2nd at the North Bay Regional Health Centre. Survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Eleanor (Hogan), and his four children Susan La Forge (David), Glenn, Ann and Bill (Barbara). He is also survived by six grandsons: Jeff and Graham La Forge, Kevin and Peter Mitchell, Calvin and Emmett Mitchell. Brother to Bob (Nancy), Betty Brigham (Bruce), John, sister-in-law Ruth Armstrong (Frank) and brother-in-law Don Hogan (Barbara), and predeceased by sisters Ann Montemurro (Richard); Marion Earl (Ike) and his parents Peggy and Bill.Tom was born on October 3rd 1929 in North Bay. He attended NBCIVS and completed one year of engineering at the University of Alberta in Edmonton in 1950 before starting his career with the Ministry of Transportation and Communications in the engineering section. Retiring after 37 years in 1986. He was always active in the North Bay sports community. At the age of 19 he was the youngest referee in NOHA history and over the next 11 years travelled across Ontario officiating in countless games. In addition he pitched fastball for 20 years, winning several championships and he coached minor hockey. Tom was an avid golfer in his retirement and was a member of the North Bay Golf Club. He always enjoyed a round with old friends or family, especially getting out early on the back nine.Tom was an active member of the Board of Managers at Calvin Presbyterian Church for 14 years, a member of the North Bay Hall of Fame Committee for five years and a long standing member of the Nipissing Lodge #420. The family will receive visitors at Martyn Funeral Home on Monday evening between 7 & 9pm. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held at Calvin Presbyterian Church at 2:00 pm on Tuesday May 7th, 2013.
