Obituary of Jessie Bell Jamieson

Jamieson, Jessie Bell Jessie Bell (Smith) Jamieson passed away on Mar 28th, 2013 peacefully at home in her 96th year. A native of Inverness, Cape Breton Island, Jessie was born on Sept. 29, 1917, the fifth child in a family of seven, daughter of Fred W. and Annie Hortense (Cameron) Smith. After graduation from Inverness Public Schools, she entered nurse’s training at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, graduating as an RN in 1941. During wartime, Jessie joined the RCAM Corps in 1942 and served as a Nursing Sister in Newfoundland, England, Italy, Holland and Germany treating allied and enemy soldiers alike. Upon her return, she enrolled in the School of Public Health at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1947 then joined the staff of the Kirkland Lake Public Health Unit where she remained until her marriage to Dr. Jim Jamieson in1951. Through her long life, Jessie was always there when needed. In addition to being a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother, Jessie was a dedicated community volunteer for the March of Dimes, Canadian Red Cross and the Canadian Cancer Society and was a steadfast friend and neighbour to many in Kirkland Lake and later North Bay. She was a long time member of the North Bay Golf and Country Club and Pinewood Golf Club and an avid duplicate bridge player. Jessie was predeceased by her husband James of 59 years and by her beloved granddaughter, Margaux Munro, both in 2010. She is survived by her younger sister, Rachel Skinner of New Glasgow, N.S. Jessie’s quick wit, deep love and unfailing support will be forever missed by her three daughters, Margie Howard (Terry - North Bay), Katherine Munro (Barrie) and Dr. Vivian Jamieson (Stowe, Vermont), her grandchildren, Jennifer Tschanz (Terry), Sarah Howard (Erin) and Jamieson Munro, and her great-grandchildren, Taite and Soyer Tschanz. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church on Sunday, April 7th at 2 p.m. to celebrate Jessie’s life. Donations to North Bay Regional Hospital Foundation or St. Andrew’s United Church would be gratefully accepted in her memory.
