Dear Family,
I was really influenced by Dr. Zytaruk. I took a course in the late 90's by him about Robert Kroestch. I am now an elementary teacher and I teach a Canadian author study each year because he influenced me to view Canadian authors differently. When I graduated Nipissing University, your dad / husband was President. I was thrilled when he stood up and shook my hand. I thought of him today when I saw a facebook post about a colleague's son who had just graduated from Nipissing.

I graduated from Victoria Composite High School in Edmonton in 1956 and remember George Zytaruk well. He was a newly hired and wonderfully scholarly and gentle English teacher. I wasn't in his class, but he superbly judged a debate I organized on whether it was really Marlowe who wrote Shakespeare. His warm and analytical manner, and his enthusiasm for his field and for teaching, contributed to my decision to become an academic, which I have now been for 50 years. I also remember JoAnn Korenda, who was year or so behind me at Vic. My condolences on the passing of a very fine man, who gave so much to his students and to Canadian education right from the earliest days of his career.

Dear JoAnn and family, I don't remember too much about my life in 1955. I was 14 years old, in grade 10 at Vic Comp High School in Edmonton, and I was rather nervous to be a student in a big high school. But I do remember that in 1955 my class was fortunate to have George Zytaruk as our teacher in Language and English Literature. George set high standards in his teaching and inspired us to enrich our young lives by reaching beyond the curriculum. During summer holidays after grade 10, I spent possibly the gloomiest, rainiest summer ever in Edmonton reading "Crime and Punishment" with a big dictionary at my right side. George said we should read good literature and we, his young students, kept the public library busy. When George married my dear friend JoAnn, I got to know him as a friend too. He was a man with a kind voice, a big smile, and laughing eyes. Always a gentleman. After JoAnn and George moved to North Bay in 1967 we kept in touch with Christmas letters. I know his academic achievements continued throughout his life and he influenced countless students to appreciate English Language and Literature I know that more than anything he loved his family. I will always think of him with admiration and respect. George, you made a difference in this world and we will all miss you. To JoAnn and family - my most sincere sympathy on the loss of a fine man.

To the Zytaruk Family, my deepest sympathies on the loss of a great man. A man who was a visionary, who taught so many people the proper usage of the English language and who always gave of his free time to anyone wanting to further themselves in literature and writing. I learned more from him in one english writing course than I did from all of the individuals who taught me english in my life. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you during this trying time.

George and Joanne moved to North Bay at the same time (1967)as I came to start up my medical practice. They were referred to me before I even arrived by a nurse (I was an intern) in the Emergency Department of the University of Alberta Hospital who was a friend of Joanne's. They remained patients and friends until I left North Bay in 1978, and became patients again when Joanne came to Toronto to study law. I had the greatest of respect for George as a genial, erudite scholar and gentleman. I want to send my sincere best wishes to the whole family
