Obituary of Beverly James Cottrill

COTTRILL - Beverly James ‘B.J.” (Candy Man) Retired Captain, North Bay Fire Department B.J. died peacefully at Cassellholme, on Monday August 6th, 2012 at the age of 78 years, following several months of declining health. For the past 57 years he has been the devoted and loving husband of Rilla Ann Marie Thomson. The proud and loving father of Jim of North Bay, Chris (Carolyn) of Penticton B.C., June DaSilva (Kevin) of Barrie, and Cathy Laslo, (John) who predeceased him April 28, 2012. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Garrett and Cody Cottrill, Jeff, Jordan, and Kristy DaSilva and Ben Laslo. He was also predeceased by his granddaughter Rebeka Laslo and sisters Shirley Hansman and Sharon. He will be sadly missed by his brother Ken (Esther), and sisters Jean Farnsworth, Phyllis “Dode” Burton, Joy Black (Clarence) and June Clingen (Ed). Born and raised in North Bay he grew up here during the depression years. After a brief stint working out west he returned to the city and a job setting type for the Nugget. He left the Nugget to join the North Bay Fire Department and retired as a Captain 36 years later. A devoted husband and father B.J. was also an avid hunter and fisherman, thoroughly enjoying his time in the out of doors. He will be remembered by many as the “Candy Man”. He loved children and always had a treat for them, keeping his pockets and even his locker at the station well supplied. He will be missed by his family and many friends. Friends may call at the Martyn Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 6 – 8 pm. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held in the funeral home chapel on Friday August 10th at 2:00pm. Interment to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. If desired and in lieu of flowers donations to the Parkinson Society will be gratefully acknowledged as expressions of sympathy.
