The story of Frederick David Alger is the tale of a quintessential story teller, a glad hander and a friend to so many. It is the story of a proud father and grandfather. It is also the story of countless battles with adversity and fresh starts in life.
Dave the story teller:
• Dave was such an affable guy. He loved to laugh and make others laugh. He could spin yarns and tell jokes in the most entertaining and humourous way. Often, even before Dave would get to the punch-line, he would get to laughing so hard himself, there would be tears streaming down his cheeks. Dave made friends quickly and was faithful to them throughout his life. Many of his friends are in attendance today. Thank you for making Dave's life fulfilling and being an attentive and appreciative audience to his many entertaining tales.
Dave the proud papa and grandpa:
•Dave had such love for his beautiful daughters, Beverly and Jennifer. When they were just little ones he took such delight in playing, swimming and sailing with them and enjoying their childhood with them. And, of course, they all enjoyed that aptly-named dog "Useless". He was a bad boy with a lot of BAD habits - but that's a story for another day. When Bev and Jen were in high school Dave took great pride in telling those around just how good they were in school and how they enjoyed music and all manner of other things. When the girls reached adulthood Dave would puff up and speak about them with such care, concern and pride.
•Dave thought the world of grandson Brayden. I think they were pretty close "buds". When Dave and I spoke at last summer's Alger reunion he was so excited about the birth of his newest grandson, Oliver.
Dave genuinely loved children and they loved him back.
Dave the dragon-slayer:
• When I was nearly 5 years old, brother Dave was born in the North Bay Civic hospital on November 9th, 1947. His first battle was to survive, for he was born with polyps on his bowel and severe respiratory problems.
• He was released from the hospital several days after birth. When he got home, a tent was erected over his crib with a steamer inside. Fryer's Balsam - a tarry black evil substance - was added to the water in the steamer, the fumes from which acted as a lung decongestant. Man did that stuff stink (at least to a five-year-old). Dave was tended around-the-clock for the first week or two and thumped on the back when he stopped breathing. Dave was a fighter, his lungs cleared and he seemed to perk up but the polyps interfered with his digestion. Dave's next hurdle was to recover from bowel surgery which was performed shortly thereafter. So that's how Dave started life - battling for survival.
• As we all know, Dave struggled through battle after battle in his business life.
• I think he was 36 years old when Dave had his first heart attack which necessitated triple by-pass surgery. It took him a while, but he did recover from that. Some 20 years later he, again, underwent by-pass surgery. Dave battled back once again. It could be said that Dave probably lived on borrowed time for about a quarter century.
• Last Monday was Dave's last battle - the one battle he could not win.
When we remember Frederick David Alger keep in mind his fantastic people skills, his love and his tenacity. These are qualities we all admire and most surely should emulate. Each and every one of us is the richer for having Dave touch our lives. Farewell Dave. Thank you brother for being part of my life. Your sisters and brother will miss you so much.
Gerry Alger

Miss Me But Let Me Go
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free!
Miss me a little - but not for long
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that we once shared,
Miss me, but let me go.
For this journey that we all must take
And each must go alone;
It's all a part of the Master's plan
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick at heart
Go to the friends we know,
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds.
Miss me, but let me go.
- Edgar Albert Guest (1881-1959)

Thank you for coming today to honour and say goodbye to our Dad. He would be smiling knowing we are all together again - family and friends really were the most important thing to him.
Our Dad's heart wasn't strong but it certainly was big. He loved unconditionally and always had something positive to say. He truly did beat the odds thanks to modern medicine and his strong will. We are grateful that we had him in our lives for as long as we did.
Our memories of childhood are good, happy ones. He loved to play with us, even though he thought a racecar track was a better gift for two little girls than say, a dollhouse, and he always had energy to give us piggyback rides or dance around the swimming pool with us. Family bike rides, cross country skiing together and Sunday dinners with family are things he loved and have given us lots of fun memories with Dad.
Dad always made us feel special and put us on pedestals all our lives. We never doubted how proud he was of us or how much he loved us. He made us believe that we really could do or be anything we chose. He was passionate about whatever he was doing and if he wasn't, he took a risk and made a change. We respect that.
This past year when he was starting another new business, we were concerned. His health wasn't good, he was in his 60's and he needed to slow down and retire. But he never stopped trying, he never gave up on his dreams and he really did enjoy working.
Dad wasn't perfect and had lots of flaws and quirks, but those are probably the things that make him most memorable. Facebook brought out some of his best "street lingo". Many a time we rolled our eyes at each other when Dad was trying to be a cool hipster! Brayden has grown up thinking there really is a tangible item called a "who-jack-a-pivy" - Dad's go-to noun for anything mechanical or tool related that he had no clue what else to call.
He may not have had the talent to craft things out of wood like his father and brother but he sure could tell a story. And never the same one twice! He was entertaining, had a great sense of humour and could speak to anyone about anything. Well read and always up on current events, it didn't matter that Dad didn't have a formal education, he attended the school of life and hard knocks and graduated with honours.
We will miss you Dad but will not be sad any more. We will chose to celebrate your life and thank you for being such a big part of ours.

I send my good wishes and consolation to Davids family. I have very fond memories of growing up with the Algers in the east end. We were at the corner of Regina and 1st Ave while Algers were the corner of worthington and Regina. The miles and time have rolled by the the fond memories remain. David and I were the same age and he left planet earth far to young. Blessings, good wishes and fond memories to you all. John Balfe

I have not seen Dave in over 35 years. I hooked up with him on Facebook recently and only passed a few words. I met Dave in grade seven. I was new to the area and Dave had all the friends at school. It took us a while to hit it off and actually had a fight in the school yard after classes. The thing that always comes to mind when I think of him (often over the years) is the great party he had at the end of grade eight. It was one of the highlights of my life....a first. Dave was a spectacular host.

Dave and I met the first day of Bad Boy training. Who would have guessed that this young gal, and that old fart would hit it off so well. Dave taught me so much on the sales floor, from his "left eyeballing" to how to close the sale. Dave was one of my mentors, he was one of my dearest friends and luckily enough a great co-worker. So many nights after our shifts we would go back to Ken and Dave's apartment, sit back, turn on some tunes cook up a feast and talk. He was always there for me at any time whether by phone or in person, he gave great support and confidence - he always knew how to put a smile on any ones face, all he had to do was show his big grin give a little chuckle and you would instantly feel better. I came to know Dave as Cousin Dave, because although we were only friends, I looked at him as an extended part of my family. Dave I am going to miss you. I am going to miss your messages on face book checking in and asking how Riah and I are doing, I am going to miss your happy birthdays every year. I am going to miss not being able to see you. I wish i had one more chance to hear your happy Voice, or see your big smile one more time. Dave, Until we meet again, I love you Buddy. The things you taught me and stories you had shared with me I will never forget and always hold dear to my heart. Friendship will never die with memories, you will always be alive in mine.

Dave and I met 2 years ago and immediately hit it off - we shared a similar off the wall sense of fun, a love of music and an ability to find the humour in just about everything. We became good friends and often helped each other over hurdles. Dave was justifiably very proud of his recently established new business and I was often his "go to" person when he needed computer help. The computer was a constant source of frustration and colourful language for Dave and he had no patience at all - he'd keep clicking the mouse in an attempt to get something (anything....) to work. When he called, the first thing I would say was "stop clicking the mouse!" We'd get together for lunch once a month or so and I took him to a vegetarian restaurant - he was appalled that they didn't have meat on the menu, so we didn't go there again! Dave told me many stories of his family and was obviously a proud brother, son, father and grandfather. He talked often about Bev and Jen and their husbands and was a very proud grandfather to Brayden and Oliver. He also talked a lot about his Mom, who he obviously admired. Dave was a great friend and he always made me laugh out loud. I'm glad you were part of my life Dave, you'll be missed but not forgotten. Wendy

Dave was not just my cousin but a friend. I'll always have a little piece of him in my heart. More than 60 years of memories...we'll be telling "Dave" stories until the day we die. From Christmas family gatherings in the 50's to just a week or so ago for Sunday dinner. So many great experiences. He was one of my biggest supporters of my art, a car for hire when I needed a lift, a confidant when I needed to share, and a hearty appetite when I needed to cook. I'm proud to have been a part of Dave's life.

Dave was thirteen when I was born and yet he was the one I tagged along after. I remember wrestling on the couch watching cartoons when we lived on the lake. Getting mad at him when I thought he'd changed girlfriends. When we lived on the farm and he brought his family to visit, I remember watching him guide his girls with humour and love and thinking I want to parent that way some day. He was the M.C. at my wedding which he managed with grace and his own manner of jokes and warmth. He played "the bounce thing" with our daughter on his knee and I saw that same joy in the pictures of Dave with his grandsons. My life has been richer because of the time I had with my brother Dave. Give our Momma a hug for me Dave. I love you. Jeannie xoxo
