SMITH – Walter
Passed away peacefully at Nipissing Manor Care Giving Center on Saturday October 29, 2011, while in his 91st year. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Evelyn, and his five children; Linda Longhurst (Sam) of Bracebridge, Marshall Smith ( Lise) of North Bay, Lois Hamilton ( Jeff ) of Brantford, Mark Smith ( Lynda) of Ottawa and Greg Smith (Kristi) of Sudbury. Walter will be lovingly remembered by his twelve grandchildren Lilaya & Delwyn Longhurst, Daniyka, Felecia & Landon Smith; Rebecca & Alyson Hamilton; Jacquelyn & Brent Smith and Morgan, Hanna & Ben Smith, and his sister Daisy McDonald of Sundridge, and numerous nephews and nieces. Walter served in WWII with the Royal Regiment of Canada and after the war worked as a carpenter with Bennett & Pratt, Vic Evans Construction and then spent thirteen years with housing at CFB North Bay. For over 50 years Walter and Evelyn ran a small tourist resort on Eagle Lake, South River, located on part of the farm where Walter grew up. He was a long standing member of Trinity United Church, serving on the Official Board, acting as chairman of the Ushers, and Buildings & Grounds Committees and has been a long time active member of the AOTS. Upon retiring from his official duties he was appointed a Lifetime Honorary Elder. For many years he canvassed his neighbourhood for the Canadian Cancer Society and the Legion Poppy Fund. When asked what the highlight of his life was he replied “his marriage, his children, and his grandchildren”. Friends may call at Martyn Funeral Home on Tuesday afternoon and evening from 2 – 4 & 7 – 9 pm. Funeral services will be held in Trinity United Church on Wednesday November 2, 2011at 1:30pm.
