I was very saddened to hear of Michael's passing. He was always very courteous and respectful in all my past dealings with him. He was one of the most pleasant defence counsels I have ever had any dealings with. We would always share stories and pictures of our shih-tzus whenever we met each other on files. He was a wonderful "down to earth" man whom I admired and respected a great deal. He was a great human being and he will truly be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loves ones.

We have had the privilege of knowing Michael, Susan and Noah for 15 years. We were able to witness their love and adoration for each other. Michael was witty, self-deprecating and always very articulate. We loved his stories. I ran into him in the middle of winter last year...and he was in his black flip flops, dreaming of his next vacation with Susan in their favourite location. My heart breaks for Susan and Noah His guidance will be missed but we all have a special angel to watch over us. Xo

Mike Birnie was a consummate professional who prepared meticulously and made it all seem easy. Mike was kind and courteous to counsel and their clients. He conducted himself in an exemplary fashion in his dealings with others, regardless of their station in life. i will always cherish the conversation we had over the years, our banter over the life's travails. i heard from michael in an unexpected call, one afternoonwhen i was facing a serious personal challenge. Every morning, without fail, Michael's car was in its spot at the back of our building. It was a constant, like the sun rising. Every morning we would chat, mostly about sports, either lamenting or cheering the latest win/loss of the North Bay Battalion, the Blue Jays and, of course, the Steelers. I will miss those constants; the smell of his coffee, the stashes of jelly beans, the crisp white Court shirts hanging in the coat closet, his praising sticky notes, and the Trial Files spread across the Board Room table as we prepped for "war." The sound of his flip flops, summer AND winter, the "swish" of his sport pants and, most of all, his witty sense of humour. Michael's clear voice and precise dictation was every Transcriptionist/Court Reporter's dream! He was an exceptional Litigator; organized and prepared, tough, yet fair and understanding. He was generous and kind to his Clients. As an employer, he was caring and thoughtful and his "Team" were Queens! I am so proud to have been a part of Michael's "Team" at Birnie Law Firm, and the predecessor Firms. I will miss him dearly. My heartfelt condolences to Susan and Noah.

Rest Easy, Michael Until this sad time, for at least the past 25 years, Michael was responsible for all of the insurance defence work for the City of North Bay. It was very important to the City, the Council, and the staff ( upon whom he would inevitably rely as witnesses ) that such defence work could be carried out by North Bay counsel. But as much as I trusted and appreciated his always wise and objective legal work, what I appreciated more was any opportunity to talk to him. He would inevitably have a concerned, but light, touch, no matter how serious the topic. It usually included a good story. And I would remember how much he was like his father, Paul: a true gentleman, and so capable. Gone far too soon. My sincere sympathies to Susan and family.

My condolensces to Mr. Birnie's wife and family. I worked with Mr. B. in Bracebridge on a quite a few examinations. He was a true gentleman, so soft-spoken and kind, even to the opposition. Sincerest condolences to the Birnie Family. Michael was defence counsel on a matter in which I represent the plaintiff. I recall flying up to North Bay from Toronto over a year ago for a proceeding in our common matter, and meeting Michael for the first time. Although he was opposing counsel, I was immediately struck by his kindness and civility. Both smart and tough, he was nevertheless the quintessential gentleman in the finest tradition of the Bar. His passing is undoubtedly a deep loss to our legal community; however, he leaves an exemplary legacy that can only serve to inspire lawyers that knew Michael or would like to have.

Farewell, Mr. B. I will miss his tales of another attempted murder of him by the Globe & Mail projectile hurled at him while he stood guard at the front door of our building. I will miss having to climb the stairs to collect our missing coffee cups. I will miss his car running ... forever ... in the wintertime, as it sits ready and warm for his next "health break". I will miss the happy wave as he bounded up the stairs after escorting his sweetheart to her car. I will miss the slap of his flip-flops and the swish of his "rain" pants on those days when he was not "dressed to kill." I will miss listening to his skilfully crafted questions, and the appearance of that dimple when he got an "ah-huh" type answer. I will miss the sound of his voice - calm, clear and prepared - and his ability to stop talking when he was being interrupted. I will miss my greatest professional "perk" of no longer being able to assert my position when it came to picking the "Birnie" project to complete. I will miss the kind and generous man who, over the years, always made time for his crazy tenant and her latest situation. I will miss him telling me to "Go home," when I knew he had been at his desk long before I arrived, and would be at his desk long after I would leave. What I will not miss is the heartache of knowing he was no longer able to do that which he loved with those whom he loved. Farewell, Mr. B. You will be missed by all who had the good fortune to have met you, be never forgotten by those who had the opportunity to know you, and to live on in the hearts and memories of those who loved you.
