Winnifred Mary Palmer passed away peacefully on Friday, May 5, 2017 at the age of 85 at Eastholme in Powassan, Ontario. She was predeceased by her by her husband Dr. Walter Lawrence Johnson in 1978 and her husband Doug Palmer in 2003. Winnifred was the beloved mother of Ruth (Mark Christensen), Cynthia (Rod Moffitt), Walter Johnson (Cathy) and Cheryl (Jason Smith). She was the proud grandmother of Sara, Jacob, Anne, Emily (predeceased), Julia (predeceased), Nancy, Jenny, Julie, Hannah, Sawyer and Ryder. Winnifred was the step-mother of Julaine Palmer (George Neil), Dan Palmer ( Kenda) and Mark Palmer (Stephanie).
Winnifred Mary Burpee was born June 16, 1931 in Jacksontown, New Brunswick. She became a Registered Nurse, then majored in Psychology at Gordon College, Massachusetts. She subsequently studied midwifery in Scotland . She met Dr. Walter Johnson in Liverpool, England and they were married April 16, 1960 in Jacksonville, N.B. They then went to Angola and Zaire, Africa as Medical Missionaries with the Canadian Baptist Overseas Mission Board, serving there until 1970. Back in Canada, the family settled in North Bay where Winnifred became a Public Health Nurse for many years teaching prenatal classes and visiting new mothers throughout the Nipissing District. Winnifred was an active member of her home churches of First Baptist Church in North Bay and Gilmour Memorial Baptist Church in Bridgenorth, serving on many committees.
Visitation for Winnifred will take place at the Martyn Funeral Home, North Bay on Sunday, May 7th from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 7:00 - 9:00 pm. The funeral service will occur on Monday, May 8th at 1:00 pm at First Baptist Church, North Bay followed by refreshments in the church hall. . If desired, donations in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Alzheimers Society or to Camp Norland. Online condolences may be offered at www.martynfh.com. Winnifred's family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Eastholme and Dr. Derek ng for all the wonderful care they offered and provided to Winnifred during her stay with them .
