Obituary of William James Demarco
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William “Bill” Demarco, a beloved teacher, friend, and family man, who brought warmth, wit, and dedication to every aspect of his life. Predeceased by his parents, James and Angeline (Piersanti), Bill leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
He will be deeply missed by his children, Katharine (John), Paula (Nino), and James (Sarah), as well as his brothers Paul (Louise, deceased) and John (Denis). His grandchildren, Jonathan, Carly (Jordyn), Nicholas, Adam, Ben, and Matthew, and great-grandchildren Carter and Kenley, will fondly remember the time spent with their Poppa. Bill was also a beloved uncle, cousin, and friend to many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will continue to celebrate his life.
Born and raised in North Bay, Bill cherished his memories of growing up on Main Street West. His stories often painted a picture of a simpler, joyful time filled with family and love. Before his health declined, Bill was often a regular at Twiggs, enjoying morning coffee and camaraderie with friends, a routine that brought him great joy.
A teacher for 30 years, Bill considered his time as an educator one of his proudest accomplishments. His love for teaching and dedication to his students were unmatched. Known for his animated character ties, Bill's unique humour brought smiles to the classroom and staff room alike. Upon retirement, he affectionately gifted these ties to his colleagues as a way to remember him. He had an uncanny memory for names and delighted in running into former students, often correcting their grammar during the conversation.
A devoted Catholic, Bill’s faith was a guide in his life. He adored his family and treasured the time spent with his children and grandchildren. Whether chauffeuring them to hockey practices, reading stories, practicing baseball, or watching “The Wiggles” on repeat, he found joy in every moment. Bill’s passion for reading, his love of classic war movies, and his encyclopedic knowledge of M*A*S*H episodes were well known. He was an avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, The Buffalo Bills and the North Bay Centennials, now Battalion.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Cassellholme for their compassionate care during Bill’s final days.
Bill’s humor and dedication to his family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. The family will host a visitation at Martyn Funeral Home on Saturday, December 21, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., followed by a prayer ceremony. A funeral mass and interment will be scheduled in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s memory may be made to One Kids Place or the North Bay Food Bank.
