In Loving Memory of Gordon Gerard Carey (1945–2024)
It is with profound sadness that the family of Gordon Gerard Carey announces his passing at Health Sciences North in Sudbury, Ontario on Sunday, December 8, 2024.
Beloved husband of Patricia Agnes Carey, Gord was the loving father of Paul (Carolyn), Wayne, Brenda (Pat), and Neal. He will be fondly remembered by his cherished grandchildren: Andrew, Sydney, Maia, Joshua, Alexandra, Liam, Tara, Tenley, Paislee, and Taylum.
Gord will be dearly missed by his siblings: Matthew (Patricia), Mary (predeceased by Eric), William (Carolyn), Pierce (Lorna), Howard (Madonna), and Jacqueline (Douglas) — as well as his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Bridget, and by his sister Madonna (David), and Katherine (Angus surviving).
Born in Newfoundland in 1945, before its confederation with Canada, Gord was a proud Newfoundlander who embraced his roots and heritage, drawing strength and joy from the culture of his Irish ancestors. In 1987, he made the bold decision to uproot his life and move to Manitouwadge, Ontario, on the mainland, determined to secure a brighter future for his family.
Gord built a remarkable career in the mining industry as a miner, shaft man, and hoist man. Known for his exceptional skill as a hoist operator, he was highly sought after for his expertise. Outside of work, Gord’s passions were as lively and spirited as the man himself.
He loved moose hunting and rabbit catching, reveling in the natural beauty of Newfoundland and subsequently, Northen Ontario. Gord was a music lover, with a particular fondness for Irish Newfoundland tunes and heartfelt ballads that had him tapping his toes. He was also a fantastic dart player, bowler, and pool player who thrived on friendly competition. A long-suffering Toronto Maple Leafs’ fan, Gord’s loyalty to his team was unwavering.
Gord’s sense of humor was infectious, his devilish grin lit up the room. He loved to laugh and bring joy to others, cherishing every moment spent with family and friends. Above all, Gord was a devoted husband and father who understood the value of family and carried his love for his roots with pride.
Though his passing was unexpected, Gord left this world as he lived — with a smile on his face and a song in his heart.
A Mass will be held at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church (299 Airport Road) on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 2:00 pm. A celebration of Gord’s life will follow at Castle Arms event space (400 Olive St. W).
