Sincerest condolences to the family of Joan. I remember Joan from many years ago as coach with the North Bay Figure Skating Club. She had an unsurpassed devotion to her sport and contributed immensely to building a figure skating legacy for North Bay and area. She will surely be missed but her legacy will live on.

I was very pleased to have Joan Wilkes as my figure skating instructor when I was young! I assisted children in school skating programs during my teaching career! Skating made me feel free as a bird!

My deepest sympathies to all of the family. I was with the Cochrane Figure Skating Club for over 30 years so knew of her and what a sweet person and coach she was with her zest for life! My daughters (both in their 30’s) had Joan for a coach during summer school at the Pete Palangio arena and just loved her! She will definitely be missed! Once again my condolences!

Mrs. Wilkes affected me in many ways. My own skating experience was during the 70’s and 80’s and I started my coaching journey in North Bay and then continued coaching in Kingston during my studies at Queen’s University. My choice of continuing with coaching led me to an international exchange with a Swedish club and in extension me living in Sweden. This has led me to other life choices which have always been connected to the love and benefit of sport. Mrs. Wilkes represented how sport can make a difference for many in a so many unexpected ways.
Thank you, Mrs. Wilkes (Joan).
My thoughts are with your family,
Lori Hodgson (Strandh)

Very sorry to hear of the loss of Joan. She looks and sounds like she was quite a lady. Sad I didn’t actually know her but I know Jodi loved her very much. As requested in the obituary I’ve made a donation on Joan’s behalf to Kidsport North Bay. Unfortunately I can’t be at the celebration of life on December 13 as I will be away but I do ask that my best wishes be passed along to the family.

Sincere condolences to the whole family. Memories may fade, but they’ll live forever in your hearts.
Joan’s contribution to the development of young people, especially in the figure skating world is unmatched. Her commitment to individual development and her contribution to the local club is revered and applauded. I was honoured to have been a small part of her contributions. She will be remembered and missed by so many. Rest easy, dear Joan!

Joan was the woman who led me through the years of growing up at the rink. Early mornings, after schools, road trips. She inspired, mentored, encouraged not only me, but so many of us. The lucky loonies before competitions, the “strict” bedtimes, so many figure 8s. I am so grateful for the impact Joan had on me not only as a figure skater, but a person. Sending my deepest condolences to Joan’s family.

My sincerest and deepest sympathy for your loss. She will be greatly missed but will remain in the hearts of all those whose lives she touched. She will always be Mrs Wilkes to me. I could never adjust to calling her Joan when I started coaching. So rest in peace Mrs Wilkes. To all her children: may the wonderful memories of her be your comfort in this difficult time and in the years to come.

to the Wilkes Family. Your mom was a blessing to me becoming the skater I was as a hockey official. The early mornings at Memorial Gardens yes 6 am for a six week period helped me greatly in the part of hockey I loved. It also created a lifelong friendship off the ice. A great soul, a beautiful heart. Another great North Bayite gone to heaven. RIP Joan!
