Obituary of David Arthur Youmans

David Arthur Youmans, 86,  of Gorman Street North Bay, passed away on Canada Day, July 1, 2023.

Dave was born at 675 Morin Street North Bay on February 11, 1937 to Laura (Collins) and Herbert Youmans, the brother of Margaret, Edna and Joan Youmans.  Dave attended the school of hard work, his first job helping his dad deliver coal via dogsled to the businesses on main street in 1942.  He bought his first business for $15, a North Bay Nugget paper route on Victoria Street, which he operated at a tidy profit of $5/week from 1945 to 1953. He got a summer job after grade 9 at the Ellsmere Brothers Saw Mill at Tilden Lake on the jack ladder, feeding logs to the mill at $4.50/week which included room and board. The fateful summer of ’52 at the mill he met Sadie McMaster, the love of his life, who he married Aug 9, 1958 and would share the next 70 years with.  After a move back to the city, he worked as a savings teller at the Bank of Nova Scotia which led to a 38 year career at Sears Canada, rising through the many ranks from Credit Manager to Vice President and Chief Information Officer.  Over the years Dave and Sadie relocated 10 times around the province with their three children Todd (Denise), Brad (Susan) and Janice (Blayne Mallette) to develop many lifelong friends, epic vacations and cherished memories. In 1994 they retired to Tilden Lake and travelled the world together. He is survived by his loving wife, three children and spouses, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  A celebration of life ceremony  will be held on August 19, 2023 at Martyn’s Funeral Home, 464 Wyld Street North Bay, ON P1B 1Z5 at 11:00 AM.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Rorab Shrine Club, North Bay, (705) 472-3650 or the North bay Regional Health Centre.
