Obituary of Dr. Jon Spencer
It is with great sadness that the family of Dr Jon Ross Linton Spencer announces his passing on June 27th, 2023 in North Bay. Jon was born in Toronto March 27 1938, the only child of George and Enid Spencer (both deceased). Jon married Donna (Horne) in 1962. They had three children, Andrew (Barbara), Stephen (Micheline) and Jennifer (Shawn Hocking and son Alexander). Grandpa will be dearly missed by grandchildren Samuel and Myriam.
When Jon finished his training in ophthalmology, he embraced northern life moving to North Bay in 1967 and caring for patients in the region for over 50 years. Some years Jon would even fly into remote northern communities to provide care to residents.
Jon was a keen participant and spectator in sports. Early on in North Bay, Jon helped bring in rules for face protection in minor hockey to reduce eye injuries. He volunteered at the North Bay Nordic ski club maintaining trails and participated at various fund raisers. There was much talk about Jon’s perilous bike ride in from Peninsula road on hwy 63 to his office or the hospital.
Knowledgeable, supportive, loving and caring, Jon will be forever remembered by his family and friends.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday July 4th from 6-8pm at Martyn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to North Bay Regional Health Centre and Foundation’s Ophthalmology Fund.
