I just learned of Mr Tillander's passing. While I haven't seen him in quite some time, I will always remember him. He taught me computer science and drama at Confederation HS. He was an amazing teacher who genuinely cared about his students. I even volunteered along with him at several track meets. He had a profound influence on my life, and I am deeply sorry for his family's loss. Please know that he will not be forgotten. He was a truly good man.

My uncle Shawn was my hero.
He was a like a dad to me.
He was there for me in my life when I felt most alone. Shawn was always there to help the people he cared about.
He bought me the flowers for my first ever garden. He got me winter coats when the winter was too cold. He hand painted me a brand new bike to make it my favourite colour, always brought my favourite snacks, helped me get my first job. He drove me to auditions and rehearsals and encouraged me to take my dreams seriously.
Now every time I plant a flower I do it and remember you, when I sing at the top of my lungs I hope you are still listening, and I hope to never stop dreaming because you never did.
I know you would be so proud of who I am today.
My uncle Shawn always encouraged me to go out and have as much fun as possible because life is too short to stay sad. I promise that I will keep every lesson and story from you so close to my heart. Everything I do today, I do to make him proud.
If I’m a good person it is because my Uncle Shawn taught me the value of hard work, showed me to always truly care for others, and taught me to always stand up for who I am.
I know you would be so proud to hear that I got my drivers license.
I will still always be a P.I.M.A (pain in my ass) even if you aren’t around anymore. I miss you every single day.
If anyone has any lovely stories or memories you would like to share of Shawn, please feel free to reach me at emilytilander@gmail.com
It will always make me smile.
There were so many people that loved him.
I love you so much uncle Shawn.

You were one of my favorite teachers, one of the ones who believed in me even when I didn't believe in myself. We always were in contact. You helped me out with school and with Cas. You always made sure I got home safe after rehearsals and anything like that. You are a big reason I graduated. I am so glad you got to meet Cas and Alexis. Mr.T you will be missed so much. You were my friend, no more than that you were like family to me and I will forever be grateful for that. Thank you for believing in me and for everything you did for us. Our deepest condolences to your family and friends.

Mr T the world won't be the same without you. You were one of the best teachers anyone could have ever asked for. I'll always cherish our conversations. You helped me through a lot of hard times. I'm glad I got to see you at the Telethon before covid hit. One of the last things he said to me was Caroline im not your teacher anymore you can call me Shawn. But i couldn't i told him he will always be Mr T. Then again we had a great conversation. I'm also glad you got to meet my kids. Thank you Mr T for being an amazing teacher in school and in life.

Very sad news. Shawn was a very important member of our Arts Education staff at Sudbury Secondary School. He was an integral member of the arts education staff, a goup of teachers and support staff that dedicated themselves to their disciplines and to the students they worked with. His tireless work effort, his volunteer hours, his love for his students, will never be forgotten.

I took Mr T's film class every semester in high-school. Film class was always a motley crew of kids from all walks of life and Mr T loved all of us. We loved him back. He is by far my favourite teacher I've ever had and has shaped my character probably more than I even know. Rest in peace Mr T. Lotsa love and a few tears from Nathan Burns out in Edmonton.

Shawn’s passing is a huge loss to Sudbury’s track and field community. Although he was also a coach, Shawn was "the man” when it came to operating the photo timing system at the Laurentian track. He not only volunteered at dozens of track events, he also helped at other community events like the Dragon Boat festival. Never flustered, always ready with a joke or funny comment. I’ll miss seeing him at these events.

To my colleague, friend, fishing buddy and brother. It is clearly impossible to calculate the number of students and friends you have encouraged through teaching ,coaching and your philanthropic activities during your short time on earth.
Mr. T was a person who always kept to the background of school events, but was one of those people that made the events possible. Shawn's approach to teaching was " let's get to know each student and see how we can help them". Help came in the form of breakfast club, academic help, identifying students in need and giving everything he had to make things better for humanity.
Shawn was a lover of movies, music and fishing. To my friend and brother I end with a quote from Al Pacino " They say we die twice. Once when the breath leaves our body, and once when the last person we know says our name."

What a fantastic Teacher and great guy to learn from. Admittedly I skipped class a lot in High School. But had perfect attendance with Mr T. His classes were the only ones I actively looked forward to. I took a lot from his teachings and will forever be grateful for some life lessons he worked me through. Take care Mr T!

I had the pleasure of taking a few of Mr Tilander's classes. He always brought a smile and his sense of humor to every lesson. His classes were insightful and engaging. He didn't want simple answers for questions but more questions. He wanted his students to have minds and to think critically.
Being the person he was, Mr T was just as engaging out of the classroom as he was in it. He seemed to put his heart and soul into teaching and mentoring all that came to him.
The world needs more people like Mr.Tilander.

I taught with Shawn for a number of years way back at Confederation SS. He was always part of the gang and willing to join in whatever was going on - lots of fun and happy to be part of whatever was going on . After Confed I would run into him often helping out with extracurricular evenst - especially timing at races of all kinds. I was sad to see he had passed away - he was one of our gang . Mary Waddell

How do I sum up in a handful of words the impact of one persons life on another?
Mr. T was an incredibly kind, compassionate, funny, and gentle human. I was lucky to meet him in my first days at SSS and spent the next 5 years as a student there learning from and working alongside him in the classroom and in the theatre. He was one of my champions - always encouraging me to keep dreaming and keep trying, helping me when I needed and pushing me to fly on my own when I hesitated. I would have never dreamed of theatre school if it wasn’t for his support.
Rides home, math tutoring, lessons in music editing, late night set building, a now 2 decade long love of the game Quarto, random movie trivia, and a deep commitment to seeing the good in everyone are all gifts he gave to me.
He could always make you laugh. From onstage jokes when things went wrong mid-show (“Hey, don’t rush me. It’s a union job!”) to a grin as he tapped his head exclaiming “hey it takes kidneys” when told he had a good idea his humour could lift the spirit on the hardest days.
But mostly I will remember him for always Being There, a kind and caring teacher and friend.
You will be missed. My heartfelt condolences to the family.

I am so sad to hear of Mr Tilander's passing, he made such an impact in my life. I took his film studies class and he made me see things from new perspectives and taught me to be introspective. He was my teacher shortly after my mom passed and he was always there if I needed someone to talk to. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. He will be greatly missed by many.

I remember Mr. Tilander from high-school. He wasn't a teacher of any of my classes but despite that, the few encounters I had with him were always fun and insightful and he made it exciting to learn something. It's no surprise why so many students really adored him. He was a very wholesome man.

I knew “Mr. T” when I was in high school, and he was always helping where he could. He taught me how to edit music, which led to video editing - a skill I still use to this day as part of my profession. He also taught my husband, and they had some great laughs in his films class! He encouraged students to make great choices, like quitting smoking, and would feel upset if his students didn’t take care of themselves because of how much he cared.
I had the pleasure of getting to meet him again as a coworker, and he still showed genuine care for past and present students.
Shawn, “Mr.T,” you will be sorely missed, but heaven must have greater plans for you.

I owe my love to Technical Theatre to Mr. T. Thank you for all of the guidance and time spent in the theatre. Will always remember the time you had to jump on stage as a "janitor" when pudding spilled on the stage in the middle of the show "It's a union job." May you rest in peace.

I was a student of Mr Tilander for 3 years in the media arts program. He was the only teacher that I looked up too because of how kind and compassionate he was. He always pushed students to achieve their goals no matter what they wanted to pursue. He would always try to get on everyone's level to understand them, his teaching still resonate with me today.
He would buy homeless people coffee. When he couldn't get a field trip day for his class to support a classmates mother's funeral we skipped school and he paid for everyone's taxi across town so we could support our classmate that morning. We need more people like him on this planet and I'm going to miss him.
Condolences for his family, Rest in Peace Mr T.

Although he was never formally my teacher, I worked as a stage hand under Mr. T in 2009 for a production at Sudbury Secondary. He also spent a lot of time in the art room and we would regularly have conversations. He was a very genuine person and always made himself available if you needed to talk. He made a huge impact in many lives and he will be missed by many.
