Obituary of Gwen Haflidson

Gwen Haflidson Haflidson, Gwen Wanda - passed away on July 14, 2015 at the age of 66 years after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by her parents Dawson Rose and Emily (nee Shields), Gwen was the beloved wife of 36 years to John, with whom she shared many good times and adventures. A devoted and loving mother to son Ron (Tom Clement) and daughter Kara, she often took the opportunity to politely inform family and friends of their latest achievements. Gwen was a darling sister to Nancy Edmonds, Wesley Rose and Fern Lalonde and she cherished the special bond they shared. Born in North Bay, Gwen grew up in nearby Rutherglen, which always held a special place in her heart. She had worked as a registered nurse at the North Bay civic hospital for about 10 years when she met John in 1978. The couple left North Bay in 1979 and subsequently lived and raised their family in several communities including Timmins and Kirkland Lake, where Gwen served the community as a VON nurse for 9 years. Gwen’s friendly, caring nature and zest for life enabled her to make friends wherever she lived. Returning to North Bay in 2002, Gwen renewed old friendships and made new ones. She enjoyed golf, cross-country skiing , bridge, country music and spending time with both immediate and extended family. During her battle with cancer, her positive attitude and fighting spirit were an inspiration to many. The visitation will be held at Martyn Funeral Home in North Bay on Thursday, July 16 from 7 to 9 pm. A service to celebrate Gwen’s life will be held on Friday, July 17 at 11:00 am in the funeral home chapel, followed by internment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Bonfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Condolences for the family may be offered online at martynfh.com.
