May Ruth Rosetta MacGillivray Obituary

May Ruth Rosetta Harling-MacGillivray, 92, of North Bay, Ontario, passed away peacefully on Grandparents Day September 13, 2026, after complications from a fall on Sept 11, 2026, at the Cartier Site of the NBRHC.

May was born to parents Mary Violet Carr (Staples) and William Henry Carr on May 22, 1934.

May met her first husband, Leonard Charles Harling, in 1950. They were married on April 11, 1953, in North Bay, Ontario. Together they raised five children: Becky (Wayne) Farrow, Gord (Joanne) Harling, Darlene (Bob) Coutu, Clayton (Karen) Harling, and Gary (Cheryl-ann) Harling.

Leonard predeceased May on June 23, 1977.

She later married her second husband, Philip Charles MacGillivray, on July 6, 1991, and he predeceased her on April 28, 2005.

May worked as a telephone operator with Bell Telephone in her younger years.

One of May's greatest accomplishments was raising five successful children, who were a source of tremendous love and pride throughout her life.

Later in life she co-owned Kiddies Korner convenience store.

She enjoyed shopping with her dear friend Elaine, writing poetry, trips with her sisters and sister-in-law, reading, crocheting, baking, attending church, and doing puzzles.

Most precious to May was Family Time, with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family and friends.

It is fitting that she passed away on Grandparents Day - a day created to honour and celebrate the special place she holds in our hearts.  When the Grandkids asked why her baking always tasted so good, she would tell them it was because it was always “MADE WITH LOVE”, which was so true of everything she was ever a part of.

May leaves behind a legacy of 11 Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren who she was so proud of:

Grandchildren: Shane (Terrilyn) Farrow, Bill (Charlene) Harling, Brad (Beth) Harling, Jana (Peter) Belleau, Joel Coutu, Michael (Tina) Harling, Meghan Harling, Jessica (Brendan) Haggard, Drake (Piper) Harling and Devin Harling.

Great Grandchildren: Hayden Farrow, Jacob Farrow, Alyssa Farrow, Alanna Farrow, Sara Harling, Addie Belleau, Rilyn Belleau, Avery Haggard, Lily Haggard, Gracie Haggard, and Faye Harling.

May is survived by her lifelong and very best friend of 80 years and sister-in-law, Elaine Harling, and her sister-in-law, Maureen Carr.

She was predeceased in death by her daughter, Becky Farrow, Grandson Wayne Farrow Jr; her siblings George Carr (Annie), Gordon Carr (Millie), Almer Carr (Beatrice), Lillian Bailey (Clarney), Vivian Bird (Ralph), Henry Carr (Josephine), Dorcas Roth (Don), and Arthur Carr; and her in-laws Lloyd Harling, Reg Harling (Elsie), Jean (Don) Fraser, and Evelyn (Stan) Norman.

Family will receive friends at the Martyn Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. And on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, from 10:00–11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service from 11:00–11:30 a.m. A luncheon will follow from 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., with interment at Terrace Lawn Cemetery at 1:00 p.m.
