Joan Florance Penney Obituary

Penney, Joan Florance

Following a quick decline in health, Joan passed away at her home in Calvin on Tuesday, May 12th, 2026. She was 94 years old. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland on August 20th, 1931, Joan carried her East Coast spirit and sense of humour with her throughout her life.

She was the dearly loved mom of Dorothy Tobin (Larry), Walter Whitten, Brenda Whitten-Stocks (Andrew), and Wayne Whitten (Sandy Cross), and was predeceased by her son, Samuel Whitten. She will be lovingly remembered by her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Known affectionately as “Mama Joan” or the “mafia lady” to those who knew her best - Joan was a well-known member of the Mattawa community. She enjoyed spending time playing darts and bingo and was a familiar face at both the Mattawa Golden Age Club and the Legion. Joan had a way of making people feel welcome, and her strong personality, humour, and caring nature will not soon be forgotten.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 27th, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Mattawa Legion. Joan’s ashes will later be returned to Newfoundland, where she will be laid to rest.

A donation to the Mattawa Legion would be appreciated by the family.
