Rita Patry Obituary

Patry, Rita (Captain Phyllis Rita Beatrice Patry, MMM, CD, Retired)

Rita passed away peacefully at Northern Heights on Friday, April 10th, 2026, in her 96th year. She was the beloved wife of the late Arthur Patry, with whom she shared many years of love and companionship.

Rita was predeceased by her twin brother, Rev. Reg Thompson-Gillard. She will be lovingly remembered by her dear friend Terry Horseman, and by Logan and Jared Horseman and their families, including Chase and Nylan, who held a special place in her heart. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Nancy Dyck.

A woman of remarkable dedication and quiet strength, Rita lived a life defined by service. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on February 16, 1952, at just 22 years of age, and went on to serve for 30 years, retiring as a Warrant Officer. Known for her attention to detail as a Safety Systems Technician, Rita played a vital role in ensuring the safety of aircrew—her skill and precision credited with saving 14 lives, something she carried with great pride throughout her life.

Her commitment to service continued well beyond her military career. Rita later joined the 204 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps as an officer, where she became a mentor, leader, and “grandmother” figure to many young cadets. She ultimately retired from the Canadian Armed Forces as a Captain.

Rita’s dedication extended deeply into her community. She was a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 23, and was well known as the longtime President of the 422 (Nipissing) Wing of the Royal Canadian Air Force Association. She also gave generously of her time supporting numerous organizations, always putting the needs of others ahead of her own.

Those who knew Rita will remember her as an organized, thoughtful, and deeply caring woman—someone who lived with purpose, humility, and a genuine desire to serve others. Her legacy is one of compassion, commitment, and a life truly well lived.

Friends may call at Martyn Funeral Home on Thursday, April 16th from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service in the Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 a.m. Interment of ashes will take place at a later date, beside her husband at St. John’s Anglican Cemetery.
