Harwood, Barbara Elaine

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a beautiful woman, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Barbara Elaine Harwood, in her 87th year.

Barbara slipped away peacefully at 4:00 a.m., holding the hand of her loving son Bradley, following a courageous two-year battle with vascular dementia and cancer at the North Bay Regional Health Centre. Bradley was faithfully by his mother’s side each day, witnessing her courage, gentleness, and enduring love for everyone around her, as well as her remarkable will to live. The family is deeply grateful for the compassionate care shown by the PSWs and nurses, whose kindness brought great comfort during this difficult time.

Beloved wife of 63 years to the late Sam (John) Harwood (1936–2016). Loving mother of Bradley, who returned home from BC to support and care for his parents in their later years, as well as Greg, Dennis, and Lisa and their families. Dear sister of Vernia Fournie (late George, 2017) and Deborah Hague (Gordon).

Barbara was predeceased by her cherished granddaughter Victoria (1996, age 2), her parents Howard Maskell (1996) and Phyllis Maskell (2005), and her sister Corine Adlem (2024).

Barbara worked alongside Sam in their family-run plumbing, heating, and fuel oil delivery business, proudly serving the community for over 50 years. Together, they later opened Sam’s Rod and Reel Repair, a hobby business that reflected their shared love of fishing. She especially loved fishing and camping trips, with Manitoulin Island holding a special place in her heart as a second home.

Barbara and Sam also opened their home as foster parents, providing a safe, caring, and loving environment for many babies, children, and adolescents over the years. Her kindness and nurturing spirit left a lasting impact on all who came into her care.

Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Barbara’s wishes, there will be no service.
