With heavy hearts, we share that Darryl passed away in his sleep at his home in North Bay in the early hours of Sunday, December 14, 2025. He was 61 years old.
Darryl was a deeply devoted father to his daughter Tara Kangro (Graeme), and his son Ryan Kangro (Madeline). He was born on May 25, 1964, to Dianne Hayes and Ray (Rein) Kangro. He is lovingly remembered by his siblings Lisa (Colin), Jason (Tracey), and Shay.
Darryl had a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews ~ Brittany, Caroline (Connor), Faith, Johnny, Kaiya, and Jade ~ as well as his great niece Greta. He loved and cared deeply for each of them.
He grew up in Temagami and North Bay, where lifelong friendships were formed. From his early years with Donald and Henry, to later living in Toronto with John, he was surrounded by people who brought laughter, loyalty, and companionship into his life, along with a few (many) stories that are probably best left untold. He was deeply grateful for these friendships and considered himself very lucky to have such wonderful friends by his side.
Dad’s career took many turns, from chemical engineering to teaching high school math, reflecting a lifelong search for something he truly loved. In the end, it was always clear that what he loved most was his children. He loved Tara and Ryan more than anything. He devoted himself to us, filling our childhoods with fun, magic, and a sense of safety. Nothing was perfect, but his love for us never wavered, and that is what will be remembered most.
He faced many difficult life obstacles over the years, most recently cancer at the beginning of 2025. Through it all, he drew strength from his love for Tara and Ryan, fighting every day for them.
To say I’m proud of my dad would be an understatement. He wanted to leave the world and more for me and my brother, it was never enough for him. But I hope he knows it was enough for me. The experiences, the memories, and all of the love is more than enough.
As per Dad’s wishes there will be no formal ceremony. He will be celebrated by family and friends at a later date (probably with some AC/DC and Judas Priest playing in the background).
Those wishing to honour his memory are encouraged to do something meaningful for themselves or their children. Whether it’s splurging on that NHL game you’ve been debating on or creating a little magic for your kids, we think that would have made him smile the most.
