McConnell, William “Bill”

The family of William McConnell, known to most as Bill or Billy are heartbroken to announce that he passed away on September 25, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Billy’s steady presence is going to be greatly missed by his wife Bonny (nee Kerr) of 51 years and their children Jenny (Nolan) and Scott along with their grandchildren, Hannah and Alexander Mackie and Liam and Lauryn McConnell and his dog, Charlie.

Bill was born to Rose and Ernest McConnell in Parry Sound on March 27, 1949, and was one of their sixteen children. He is survived by his sisters Margie (Dennis) and Sara (Mike) and his brother Jimmy.  He was pre-deceased by his brothers Gilbert, Ernie, Dennis, Clifford, David, Ephie, Bobby and Michael and his sisters Leona, Rita, Sheila and Kate. Bill will also be missed by his many nieces, nephews, in-laws, out-laws and friends.

Billy retired as a Locomotive Engineer after a long career of 34 years with CP rail in 2008.  He enjoyed a long retirement where he was able to focus on his number one priority, his family.  Dad provided endless support, guidance, encouragement and always a helping hand to Scott, Jenny, and their families over the years that really is unmatched by anyone they know.  

Grandpa was always so grateful we all lived here in North Bay, and for many years within walking distance to their house which provided so many opportunities for time spent and to develop close relationships with his grandchildren. The ‘Barbecue King of the North’ fine-tuned his ‘Billy Burgers’ over the years which were a staple of the many dinners and get togethers we enjoyed. Grandpa was at every event, birthday and celebration; most recently as Hannah’s selected witness when she married Nicolai this past July.

Billy also provided support to many family members over the years. He was probably the most reliable person you have ever known, someone you could trust and who always acted with integrity.

Billy, Dad, and Grandpa, we are so very thankful we got to spend as much time with you as we did. We all love you so much and you will always be so very missed. We know that you would tell us all to 'stop whining!', and refer us instead to the title of one of your favourite songs, (sang by Jim Kerr -no relation!), lead singer of the band Simple Minds, ‘Don’t You Forget About Me'.... and we won’t!

A graveside service will take place on October 18, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Sylvan Acres Cemetery just outside of Parry Sound, where he will be laid to rest in the company of many passed family members and friends.  A reception will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Torrance Funeral Home in Parry Sound.  Online condolences may be left at www.martynfh.com or www.torrancefuneralhome.com
