Obituary of Douglas John Armatage

Please share a memory of Douglas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

On Thursday February 20, 2025, in his 86th year, Doug passed away peacefully surrounded by family after a lengthy and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.  He is survived by his devoted soulmate of 62 years, Dianne (Larouche) and younger brother Sid. Cherished father to Kelly Trahan (Michael) and Sandy Clark (Jason). Loving grandfather to Kirt (Justine), Amy, Nicholas, Cameron, Reagan and Ryann. Great-grandfather to Emma. Loving uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Born in Lanigan Saskatchewan July 22, 1939 to Don and Agnes.  He spent his formative years in Listowel Ontario.  Doug graduated from the University of Toronto in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.  His first job was in New Liskeard with the then Department of Highways, working as an integral part of the Tri-Town Bypass construction.  This is where he met the love of his life, Dianne, and was embraced by the large Larouche family.

He had a distinguished career with the Ministry of Transportation Ontario contributing to the structural design of roads and bridges throughout the province. After 33 years of service, Doug retired from the MTO to fully enjoy his cherished home on the lake.

Doug was a tireless volunteer in East Ferris Township, committing countless hours to the planning board, the cemetery, the food bank and Sacred Heart Church.

He was actively involved in many sports leagues in the city, including the GMFA Men’s Fastball league, where he was well-respected as one of their best shortstops. In addition to baseball, he loved all outdoor activities. He and Dee made many memories while on their numerous cross-country camping trips.  His passion was downhill skiing.  He served on the Mt. Antoine and Laurentian ski patrol for many years.

You could often find him gardening at his Trout Lake home, where he and Dee raised a family, and lived for over forty years. Time away from the garden would be spent around the lake.   He loved swimming, snorkeling, canoeing, windsurfing, boating or just sitting on the dock enjoying a cold beer.

Doug was always positive, constantly humming or whistling an upbeat tune.  It was always sunny in his world.  He will be deeply missed.

His family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Cassellholme staff for their care, kindness and compassion, to the Alzheimer Society and to Nipissing Manor.

A celebration of Doug’s life will take place in early May. Further details will follow.

Donations made to the Alzheimer Society of North Bay & District, Cassellholme or Nipissing Serenity Hospice would be appreciated.
